MOUNT KURAMA

The birthplace of Usui Reiki

At the age of 56, Dr. Usui climbed Mount Kurama in hopes to attain inner peace. For 21 days Dr. Usui fasted, meditated, and prayed. On the morning of the twenty-first day, Usui experienced an event that would change his life's work forever. He had a vision of ancient Sanskrit symbols that would help him develop the system of healing he had been tirelessly working to invent. After his spiritual awakening, Usui Reiki was born. His method of energy healing gained popularity and he eventually established a clinic for healing and teaching in Kyoto.

The origins of Reiki remain a mystery, however it is widely understood that our modern version of reiki that is practiced today was rediscovered by Usui Mikao. Born August 15th, 1865 in the village of Taniai, modern-day Miyama cho, to an affluent Buddhist family. In his youth, Usui studied in a Buddhist monastery where he was taught martial arts, swordsmanship, and the Japanese form of Chi Kung, known as Kiko. In Usui later years he went on to study medicine, psychology, and theology. These influences inspired him to develop a way of healing that was unattached to any specific religion or religious belief. His goal was to discover a method of healing one could use on themselves and others that was secular in nature, making it accessible for everyone.
